Virginia's New River Gorge |
History and Heritage
|
| The history of West Virginia is
unique, as is that of the New River Gorge region. Indian raids and Civil
War skirmishes interrupted the essentially peaceful
wilderness before the Industrial
Revolution.
Following the completion of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad through
the gorge in the 1870s, the mines in the New River Gorge region became
the world's top producer of coal. Today, only remnants of the
revolution exist in museums and at historic sites. |
