Real estate in and near Mount Hope and Glen Jean, WV can be remarkably valuable and affordable, considering their proximity to the New River Gorge, the US-19 expressway, and the Bechtel National Scouting Reserve. Former commercial centers serving the New River coalfields, the towns suffered economic decline in the mid- and late 20th century and have since become primarily residential centers. At the same time, the market shift helped preserve many of its historic structures, which are now viable for adaptive reuse, particularly where the service and tourism industries are concerned.

Mount Hope and Glen Jean are both considered gateway communities for the New River Gorge and its outdoor recreation areas as well as those of the national Boy Scout reserve, now the permanent home of the National Boy Scout Jamboree. A West Virginia National Guard Armory and the headquarters for the New River Gorge National River are both located off US-19 at Glen Jean. Mount Hope's former commercial district along its Main Street has recently been designated by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a national historic district.
