
This popular New River Gorge hiking trail descends from
top of the gorge at Kaymoor Top to a point near the
bottom of the gorge at Cunard (photos). From there the trail
begins a gradual climb to the abandon
Kaymoor Mine site. Once at the mine site, you'll find abandon
mine buildings and steep steps that lead down to old
coke ovens and the ruins of the town of Kaymoor.
Notes: Bikes are
not permitted on trail beyond the mine site. Do not
enter any of the abandoned structures in the
Kaymoor area.
Trail Rating: moderate - 6.6 miles
Tailhead Information: This hiking trail can be reach
via trailheads located at Cunard and Kaymoor Top.
Cunard Trailhead: To reach
this New River Gorge hiking & biking trail from Fayetteville, WV, follow W.Va. 16 south to a left
onto Gatewood Road. Follow the latter 4.6 miles, turn
left at the Cunard sign. Go 1.8 miles at
signs indicating Cunard River Access Road. Parking is about
0.5 miles further, on right.
Kaymoor Top Trailhead:
To reach
this New River Gorge hiking & biking trail
from Fayetteville, WV, follow W.Va. 16 south to a left
onto Gatewood Road. Follow the latter 2.0 miles, turn
right at Kaymoor sign. Follow this narrow road 1 mile to
an intersection, bear left. Parking is 50 feet
down on the right.
