This New River Gorge hiking trail is probably the
hardest half-mile most people will ever hike. Worn a
century ago, the miner's trail at Kaymoor descends
steeply through switchbacks and old staircases from the
top of the gorge to the bottom -- a descent of more than
1,000 vertical feet. Near the top you'll find
spectacular views of the gorge; at the bottom, coke
ovens and the ruins of the town of Kaymoor.
Notes: Do not
enter any of the abandoned structures in the
Kaymoor area.
Trail Rating: difficult - 0.5 miles
Trailhead Information: To reach the Kaymoor Miner's
Trail from Fayetteville, WV, follow W.Va. 16 south to a
left onto Gatewood Road. Follow the latter two miles to
the left onto Kaymoor Top Road. Follow one mile to
intersection, and bear left into parking area.
