Several lakes are located in Southern West Virginia and in the greater New River Gorge region.
Map of Bluestone Lake. Blueston Dam spans the New River at Hinton, WV, forming Bluestone Lake, the third largest lake in West Virginia. Recreation in the Bluestone Lake area include: hiking, fishing, boating, camping, biking, and swimming.
Bluestone Lake, the state's third largest body of water, is adjacent to Bluestone State Park.
Hawks Nest Lake is a 250-acre impoundment on New River in Fayette County, managed as a part of Hawks Nest State Park.

Lake Stephens is a 2300-acre county park with a 272-acre mountain lake and 1900 acres of hardwood forest located about 9 miles west of Beckley, WV.
Plum Orchard Lake Wildlife Management Area , in Fayette County near Pax, WV, encompasses 3,201 acres and is is managed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources through the Wildlife Resources and Parks and Recreation sections.
New River WV's photo-tour of the Summersville Lake area includes photos of the lake and Summersville Dam.
Built under supervision of the Army Corps of Engineers between 1960 and 1966 at a cost of nearly $48 million, the Summersville Lake project provides boating, water skiing, rv camping and primitive camping and campsites, swimming, hiking, fishing, and other outdoor recreation.
