Governor Tomblin Honors Victims of Big Branch Disaster
CHARLESTON, W. Va. - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today (04/05/13) honored (click to view photo) the memory of the 29 miners who lost their lives, at the Upper Big Branch Mine. The governor placed a photo, from the 2010 memorial service, and a black ribbon at the base of the West Virginia Coal Miner Statue on the State Capitol Grounds. The photo depicts 29 miner's hats hanging on 29 white crosses. A moment of silence will be observed at 3:01 p.m. On April 25, 2010, President Barack Obama came to eulogize the lives of twenty-nine coal miners lost in the April 5, 2010 mining disaster at the Upper Big Branch Mine Miner's Memorial Service.
New River Gorge Wildflower Weekend 2013
The arrival of spring is being celebrated throughout the New River Gorge region: Wildflower Weekend 2013 will include events in the New River Gorge and programs at Babcock, Hawks Nest, Little Beaver, and Pipestem state parks. A nature-inspired art exhibit will be on display at Tamarack and the 8th annual New River Earth Day Celebration will be observed in Fayetteville.
Boy Scouts acquire 10K-acre site adjoining New River Gorge
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) recently announced the purchase of 10,600 acres of land on Garden Ground Mountain, near Beckley, WV. Expected to open by 2013, the site, named "The Summit: Bechtel Family National Scouting Reserve," will serve as the permanent home for the national Scout jamboree, a new high-adventure base, and provide expanded opportunities for national leadership and outdoor skills training. Boy Scouts to build trails in New River Gorge
More than 2,000 Boy Scouts will spend their summer building two new public trails in the national parkland of New River Gorge, according to Jeff West, chief ranger for the National Park Service in southern West Virginia.
